1) Kids in England ( I know I have observed my ones) are taught to read and write English story books between the age of 5 and 7 at school, and move on to novels for young children by 8. They are made to read at home, by the School, asking parents to prove in a diary that they have done so. This has two effects…being a novel, they learn more about the English language, spellings et cetra than any lesson would teach them. The second effect is that they fall in love with English Literature. The return is that an English language novelist can become a millionaire. One notices on a train or bus that half the passengers read novels; What do Punjabis do? We listen to I-pod or eat food!!
